Parent/Guardian Collaboration/Support: In order to help students progress with their Vietnamese education, Thang Long Vietnamese Language School strongly encourages that parents/guardians collaborate with the teachers by supervising the weekly homework assignments to reinforce learning and to speak Vietnamese with their children at home.

Policies

1. Class Hours and School Year: Class hours are from : 9:30am – 12:00pm. Parents should arrive with their student(s) at at least 10 minutes before classes begin. When classes are dismissed, please pick up your student(s) no later than 12:15pm.

• Upon arrival, students should proceed to the Common room before school starts and wait to be dismissed to their assigned classroom. Students may not enter their classrooms until either their primary teacher or teacher’s assistant is present.

• Students should not gather in the parking lot upon arrival or during dismissal. Standing in the way of cars moving throughout the parking lot creates an unsafe situation and affects the flow of traffic.

The school year typically goes from early September to mid-May. Please see the School Calendar for more exact beginning/end dates, as well as special school events.

In case of inclement weather, Thang Long Vietnamese Language School follows Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) calendar for extracurricular activities. Please check for inclement weather closures/modified schedules by referring to announcements from FCPS.

2. Absence Policy: Parents/guardians are required to provide an absent note to their student’s teacher (please use Thang Long's Absence Form ) either in advance (if the reason for absence is known) or following their student’s return to school (if absence is due to illness). 

For absences due to illness, students can bring in an absent note the following week with their completed homework to get full attendance points (10 points). For days where an absence is due to reasons other than illness, the student or parent should contact their teacher for any missed homework assignments. Any student who is absent three consecutive times without parental written permission may be asked to withdraw from TVNTL for that semester.

3. Appropriate Behavior at School: Students will behave in a respectful manner toward teachers, staff, and other students while at school. Students should dress in neat and appropriate attire. Students should only bring supplies that are necessary for performing schoolwork. Electronic devices, including cellphones, tablets, and any other electronic device brought to school must be turned off during class.

• During class instruction time, students will ask permission from the teacher if they need to be excused to go to the restroom.

• Students may not eat or drink during class instruction unless the teacher gives permission.

• If a student damages school property, the student must pay to repair or replace the property that is damaged.

• During recess or breaks, students will behave safely on playground equipment and in common areas.

The following items are NOT allowed in the school building or on school premises: sharp objects, explosive devices, illegal drugs, and items that can potentially be used as weapons. Violation of the above rules can lead to expulsion.

4. School Work: Every student is required to take the Midterm and Final exams and to complete a sufficient number of class assignments. Any student who fails to fulfill more than three class assignments will not be allowed to continue their education at TVNTL. 

Any student who is absent more than four times throughout the school year will not be allowed to advance to the next grade level, with or without parental permission. 

5. Respect for School Property: Students are required to exercise respect for the school building and property, in particular, restrooms, classrooms, and common areas, as well as the school grounds (i.e., outside landscaping, playground). Under no circumstances should tables, chairs, and other school property be removed or taken from the school. Students are expected to dispose of trash properly and maintain personal items in a neat and orderly manner.

6. School Supplies: Students should come to school wearing the school t-shirt and with supplies ready to learn and perform class work. Supplies include the following essential items: textbook(s), notebook, paper, pencil, pen, eraser, etc. Please note that the cost for the replacement of a lost textbook is $20.
